- Long March, thea long journey across China made in 1934-35 by Mao Zedong and his Communist army in order to reach a new base in northwest China. It was a dangerous journey because the marchers were often attacked by their enemies in the Nationalist army, and many of them died. Many of the people who took part in the Long March later became important members of the Communist government, including ↑Deng Xiaoping. Only one third of the people were alive at the end
